| BCNA BULLETIN, Quarterly News and Views from the BC Naturopathic Association I am excited to share with you the recent work of one of our esteemed colleagues, Dr. Karen Lee Paquette. She is a scientist, physical therapist, naturopathic physician and professor turned author, speaker and health/wellness coach.Aside of her credentials Karen is an extremely vibrant and healthy woman, whom you can tell immediately upon meeting, practices what she preaches and walks her talk. Since 1994, with her unstoppable spirit, she has been inspiring people to transform their health and appearance and in this last year she took this quest to a whole new level. With the number one cause of chronic disease being the failure to practice the principles of healthy living, Dr. Paquette, decided to tackle this problem head on from a naturopathic perspective. Resigning from her 5 year professorship at CCNM she took a sabbatical from clinical practice to help alleviate the challenges people are facing in our country and around the globe as seen in our current health crisis. Her much appreciated voice reveals to the world that naturopathy is “leading edge” in both preventative and restorative medicine. In Feb of this year, she published Stop Being Stopped whose message is to let people know that they no longer have to struggle to integrate the principles of healthy living into their lives and can easily achieve their health and appearance goals once they remove the obstacles that are stopping them. What makes this book unique is there are many resources out there that tell person exactly what to do to achieve their health goals but there are none that I have come across, other than Stop Being Stopped, that reveal how they can permanently and successfully integrate healthy practices into their lives with ease and grace. As we all know, lifestyle changes only create results as long as we continue to live them. From her “Fatigue test”, that helps individuals identify an illness or condition that may be zapping their energy, making them feel tired and lethargic, to her cutting edge insight into what stops people from accessing the discipline, willpower and desire to nurture their health, Dr. Paquette inspires people to view their health from a completely new and innovative perspective. In addition, she shares her own story of personal struggle, letting her audience know that she is not speaking from a purely physician based perspective, she too been on the other side of the doctor patient relationship. In my naturopathic practice my personal goal is for my patients to receive the health and wellness results they so desperately want and more importantly deserve. As I am sure you have experienced the results our patients receive are highly dependent upon compliance. Always looking for ways to assist my patients in finding it easier to intergrate my recommendations into their daily lives I was pleased to find this incredible resource. I am certain that we have all worked with patients that are so passionate about getting results that they not only adhere to the recommendations we make, but they return for their follow-up visit sharing lifestyle changes they’ve made on their own, new recipies they have tried and how they are sleeping soundly for the first time in their life. We have also encountered patients whose experience is quite the opposite. They’ve found it extremenly difficult, if not impossible, to adhere to our recommendations and return with guilt, shame and feelings of failure. I have often wondered what is the difference between these two groups of patients and how I could ignite that same passion in the ones who struggle. When I first read Stop Being Stopped it was like a light bulb went on. I not only understood why some patients struggled, I also gained insight into my own personal challenges. It’s the only book that I’ve found that combines Naturopathic Medicine with holistic health to address all aspects; body, mind, heart and spirit aiming to remove what’s stops people from practicing the principles of healthy living, such as, eating a nutritious diet, getting regular exercise and adequate amounts of sleep, not to mention reducing mental-emotional stress. It promotes health and wellness by providing an understanding of how the body responds to stress, how naturopathic medicine can help and provides a road map for my patients to follow on their own personal journey in life. It gives me peace of mind when I know Dr. Paquette is right their on their bedside table so they may reach out between appointments. Stop Being Stopped is written in a thoughtful and educational manner. Dr. Paquette, is highly skilled in taking complicated concepts and simplifying them for patients. The feedback I have received thus far is that it is easy to read, user friendly and defiinately written for the the layperson, effectively combining sound science with logical reasoning, backed by common sense, reliable references and great suggestions for recommend reading. Stop Being stopped makes a significant and new contibution to the field of health and wellness literature. It blends the best in naturopathic medicine with the best of self help and personal empowerment. We all know that no matter how brilliantly we put together our recommendations, if our patients do no have the ability to adhere to them it simply doesn’t create the results we are hoping for. Dr. Paquette makes what we do every day in our clinic have a much better chance of sticking and getting those results. And since I am in the results business Stop Being Stopped is a welcome addition to my naturopathic tool kit enabling me to better meet the needs of my patients. Being a resource written by a fellow Naturopathic Physician, I am excited to recommend this time saving, cost effective and holistic resource to my friends, family, patients and colleagues alike. |
